The answer is actually on their website, http://grubbygamesfiles.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=14

While playing or on normal an hour is one year, while it is off and on slow an hour is 0.5 years, and on fast an hour is 2 years. Except for normal these other times only apply to when the game is off, when it is being played it is always normal mode. There are some differences based on your computer though, it may take a bit longer. Check out the link I included, there's tons of info, and the game programmer goes on there too. For participating in the forums you may actually win a free game too.
